MiYOSMART iQ has arrived: HOYA’s next-generation lens for myopia control

Hoya MiYOSMART iQ

If your child’s prescription keeps climbing every time you visit the optometrist, you’re not alone (and not without options). At Kellyville Optical, we’re excited to introduce MiYOSMART iQ πŸ”—, HOYA’s most advanced myopia control spectacle lens, now available for children as part of our myopia management program.

Short-sightedness (myopia) in children is becoming increasingly common, and once it starts, it tends to progress year on year through childhood. Standard single-vision glasses correct blurry vision but do nothing to influence how quickly a child’s myopia is progressing.

MiYOSMART iQ is different. It’s a specially designed spectacle lens that combines everyday clear vision with a treatment zone designed to send a signal to the eye that may help slow the rate of myopia progression β€” all while looking and wearing like a normal pair of glasses.

MiYOSMART iQ builds on HOYA’s established D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) Technology, refined with what HOYA calls a Triple Enhanced Design. The three enhancements are described by HOYA as:

  • Activated – treatment segments positioned closer to the centre of the lens, targeting the area of the retina identified in research as most responsive to myopic defocus
  • Powerful – a stronger defocus signal
  • Extended – a larger treatment zone for broader coverage, even with bigger frames

MiYOSMART iQ is available in two versions:

  • MiYOSMART iQ Clear – optically indistinguishable from a standard corrective lens, for everyday wear
  • MiYOSMART iQ Chameleon – the same lens technology, with adaptive photochromic tinting that responds to changing light, plus added UV protection for kids who split their time between indoors and out

Anyone who’s bought glasses for a child knows the drill: they get scratched, smudged, sat on, and generally treated the way kids treat everything they love. MiYOSMART iQ addresses this with HOYA’s S.P.A.R.K. coating, designed to offer:

  • Enhanced scratch resistance
  • Better resistance to smudges, fingerprints and dust
  • Easier long-term cleaning
  • Reduced glare and reflections for clearer, more comfortable vision
  • UV protection from the front of the lens, with reduced UV exposure from the back

HOYA has also refined the optical design with a flatter, more optimised back-surface curvature, which is intended to reduce lens edge thickness β€” meaning glasses that can sit more comfortably in a wider range of children’s frames and look a little less “bottle-thick” as prescriptions increase.

Myopia doesn’t just mean needing glasses to see the board at school. Higher levels of short-sightedness in adulthood are associated with a greater likelihood of certain eye health issues later in life, which is why catching and managing myopia progression early β€” rather than just correcting it β€” has become a growing focus in children’s eye care.

That’s the philosophy behind our whole myopia management approach at Kellyville Optical, which also includes our Ortho-K program for families who prefer an overnight lens option. Every child is different, and the right approach depends on their individual eyes, lifestyle and prescription β€” which is exactly what a myopia management consultation is for.

Myopia control isn’t one-size-fits-all, and results can vary from child to child. The best way to find out whether MiYOSMART iQ is a good fit is a comprehensive myopia assessment with one of our optometrists, who can talk you through:

  • Your child’s current prescription and how it’s been tracking
  • Whether MiYOSMART iQ, Ortho-K, or another approach suits your family best
  • What ongoing monitoring looks like once your child is wearing myopia control lenses
