What are Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses?

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses, sometimes called hard lenses, are made from firm materials that retain their shape on the eye. Unlike soft lenses that mould to the eye’s surface, RGP lenses stay rigid, which provides more precise and stable vision.

RGP lenses are ideal for people who want freedom from glasses but have complex prescriptions. They’re especially helpful for conditions such as high astigmatism or keratoconus, where soft lenses may not give clear or consistent vision.

RGP lenses offer several advantages over soft contact lenses. They deliver sharper vision, greater durability, and a lower risk of eye infections. With proper cleaning and care, a pair of RGP lenses can last 2–3 years, making them a more cost-effective choice for daily wearers.

Because they’re made from a firmer material, RGP lenses can take a little longer to get used to. Most people adapt within a few weeks, and once the eyes adjust, they often find RGPs very comfortable and easy to handle.

RGP lenses can correct myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism. They’re also available in multifocal designs, allowing clear vision for both distance and near tasks.

There are even specialty RGP designs, such as Orthokeratology lenses (Ortho-K)🔗, which gently reshape the cornea overnight to temporarily correct myopia and reduce the need for glasses or daytime lenses.

At Kellyville Optical, we begin with a comprehensive eye examination followed by corneal topography, a detailed map of your corneal surface. This helps us determine whether your eyes are suitable for RGP lenses and allows for a custom-tailored lens fit.

Our optometrist will discuss all suitable options with you, ensuring your lenses provide optimal comfort and the clearest vision possible.
